Overview

HP File Archiving software (new name for HP File Migration Agent) is a policy-based file archiving solution that automatically captures and migrates file, web, and application server data in Microsoft Windows environments to popular storage targets, including HP Integrated Archive Platform and, via Common Internet File System (CIFS), network-attached storage (NAS) systems.
HP File Archiving software helps you retain your unstructured data in accordance with your corporate governance requirements. By allowing active, frequently used files to remain on high-performance primary storage and archiving infrequently accessed files on more cost-effective archival storage, HP File Archiving software also helps you manage more data per administrator, reduce backup and recovery times, and defer capital expenditures on new primary storage systems. Files may be archived based on common parameters, such as minimum file modification time, and may still be accessed through standard Windows file explorer interfaces, since stubs (pointers) to archived files remain on the file system. As such, no end user training is required.

When HP File Archiving software is implemented as a file mining client “front-end’ to HP Integrated Archive Platform, it can take full advantage of the comprehensive capabilities of HP’s grid-based disk archiving system, including full-content indexing, date and time stamping, high performance searching, and a wide range of retention policies.

Features

Policy-based file archiving: HP File Archiving software optimizes your storage and reduces storage and storage management costs by automatically migrating file system, web, and application server data to less expensive tiers of storage based on business policies and quality of service requirements.
Choice of archiving targets: HP File Archiving software supports file migration from Windows-based environments to HP Integrated Archive Platform or NAS resources via CIFS, giving you a broad choice of archiving targets.
Integration with HP Integrated Archive Platform: By serving as an information collector for HP Integrated Archive Platform, HP File Archiving software can take advantage of the comprehensive capabilities of HP’s disk-based archiving system, including single instancing, full-content indexing, date and time stamping, high performance search, and retention policies. A link to the powerful Web-based search tool that is built-in to HP Integrated Archive Platform enables rapid searches on complex search criteria, so information can be discovered faster than using the Microsoft Windows Explorer search interface.
Small stub footprint: HP File Archiving software stores a sparse file on the file system as a pointer to archived data. This pointer is a small fraction of the size of the original file, resulting in faster backups and recoveries.
Centralized management: HP File Archiving Create lets you create policies for all your file serving, web server, and application server environments from a central location.

Benefits

Mitigate business risk: Helps avoid steep financial penalties that result from inadequate file retention and the inability to meet legal discovery, corporate governance, and regulatory compliance requirements.
Accelerate desired business outcomes: High performance search and retrieval when HP File Archiving software is used in conjunction with HP Integrated Archive Platform minimizes the time and staff resources needed for legal discovery and litigation support, so your employees and executives alike can get back to the business of running your business.
Reduce e-Discovery costs: High performance search and retrieval helps you avoid the high costs of outsourcing your e-Discovery initiatives to an army of legal or IT consultants.
Reduce storage and storage management costs: Automatically harvesting files, web, and application data from file/application servers and primary storage systems and storing them in the lower-cost HP Integrated Archive Platform maximizes your existing storage and server resources.
Improve file server performance and availability: Moving files off of Microsoft Windows servers and into HP Integrated Archive Platform enables the file servers to run in an unburdened state for greater performance and availability.
Reduce file system backup volume and duration: Archiving files means smaller backups, for savings on disk and tape-based backup resources, and less impact on production file sharing environment.
Minimize human error and non-compliance with file deletion policies: All archive policies are created and managed centrally, and file retention happens automatically, without any end user intervention. This removes the randomness and human error often associated with user-initiated archiving, and the costly legal settlements or financial penalties that result when end users – even high-ranking executives – don’t follow corporate policies.
